VICISU 2016
The fifth Vienna International Christian-Islamic Summer University took place from 31 July to 20 August 2016. As in the previous years, Stift Altenburg served as the venue.
Over 30 students from universities from different countries such as Afghanistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ghana, Germany, Indonesia, Iraq, Lebanon, Morocco, Oman, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkey, United States of America and Austria participated.
The academic courses were complemented by round tables and discussions in the evenings. Prof. Andreas Bsteh, the founder of the Summer University, spoke about the beginnings of the interreligious initiatives in Austria. Father Michael, the Prior of the monastery and responsible for guest relations, gave guided tours through the Abbey of Altenburg and the "Garden of the Religions".
As in the previous years, Abbot Thomas Renner and the community of the Abbey invited all the participants as well as prominent guests to a celebratory reception on 5 August. The extracurricular programme also included an excursion to the Abbey of Melk, a boat trip on the Danube, a visit to the castle of Rosenburg and a variety of social events and sporting activities.
The last days of the Summer University took place in Vienna, where the students received their certificates of participation by Vice-Rector Prof. Faßmann of the University of Vienna. Afterwards, they visited the city, including the University of Vienna and the United Nations building and were invited to a reception at the Vienna City Hall and a farewell party.
